New Swift Hybrid in India: A Game-Changer for Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is all set to launch the next-generation Swift and Dzire in the first quarter of 2024. The new versions of the popular hatchback and compact sedan will feature an all-new strong hybrid powertrain that could make them the most fuel-efficient cars in the country. Here are some of the key features, engine specifications, mileage, and news about the new Swift hybrid in India.

Features

The new Swift hybrid will get a similar cabin layout as the current crop of Maruti cars, such as the Fronx, Baleno, and Brezza. It will boast of features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 360-degree parking camera with dashcam support, cruise control, automatic climate control, steering-mounted buttons, and push-button start/stop. The hatchback will also offer 13 exterior colour options, including nine monotone and four dual-tone shades.

The biggest addition in the equipment of the new Swift hybrid, however, will be the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which will include features like autonomous braking assist, automatic high beam assist, and more. The ADAS features will help the driver avoid collisions, improve visibility, and enhance safety. However, it is not clear if the ADAS features will be available in the India-spec Swift hybrid or not.

Engine Specifications

The new Swift hybrid will get an all-new Suzuki 1.2-litre petrol engine (codenamed Z12E), which will be a three-cylinder unit and not a four-cylinder powerplant. It will be mated to a version of Toyota’s strong hybrid tech, which is currently being heavily localised in India for a lower cost price. The strong hybrid system will use a high-capacity battery and an electric motor to assist the engine during acceleration, deceleration, and cruising.

The output figures of the new engine have not been revealed yet, but it is expected to produce slightly higher power and torque than the current K12C engine, which delivers 89 bhp and 113 Nm. The new engine will also comply with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms, which will come into effect from April 2024.

Mileage

The new Swift hybrid will be one of the most fuel-efficient cars in India, with an expected ARAI-rated mileage of 35-40 kmpl. This is a significant improvement over the current Swift, which has a maximum fuel-economy rating of 22.56 kmpl. The new Swift hybrid will also outperform the Grand Vitara strong hybrid, which is rated at 27.97 kmpl on the ARAI cycle.

The high mileage of the new Swift hybrid will be achieved by using the strong hybrid system, which will reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of the engine. The strong hybrid system will also enable the new Swift hybrid to run on electric mode only for short distances, further enhancing the fuel efficiency.

The new Swift hybrid has been officially unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show, which was held from November 10 to 12, 2023. The hatchback has received some cosmetic changes, such as a new front grille, new headlamps, new bumpers, and new alloy wheels. The hatchback has also grown slightly in dimensions, with a length of 3,860 mm, a width of 1,695 mm, and a height of 1,500 mm. The wheelbase, however, remains unchanged at 2,450 mm.

The new Swift hybrid is expected to launch in India in the first quarter of 2024, along with the new Dzire hybrid. The new versions of the hatchback and compact sedan will be positioned above the standard petrol and CNG variants, which will continue to be sold in the market. The new Swift hybrid and Dzire hybrid will compete with other hybrid cars in India, such as the Toyota Glanza, the Hyundai i20, and the Honda Jazz.

The new Swift hybrid is likely to be a game-changer for Maruti Suzuki, as it will offer a combination of performance, efficiency, and features that will appeal to the Indian customers. The new Swift hybrid will also help Maruti Suzuki achieve its goal of electrifying 25 percent of its portfolio by 2025. The new Swift hybrid will be a step towards a greener and cleaner future for the Indian automotive industry.
